Allan Russell Nominee Bios
Voting will soon open for association awards, sport vice presidents, and adding a sport to the BNOA. Remember, the annual BNOA Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet is Friday, August 5 at the ISU Alumni Center. Social hour at the banquet will begin at 5:30 with dinner and program to follow. Below are the bios for the nominees for the Allan Russell Award and an explanation of how the BNOA adds a recognized sport per the BNOA constitution.
Russell Award Nominees:
**Bryan Bloodworth: **
Bryan spent 30 years as a sports reporter and sports editor at The Pantagraph in Bloomington. He has been an IHSA baseball official for 12 years. Bryan began by working through youth ball and moved onto junior high and high school baseball where he has been assigned various IHSA regionals and three IESA state tournaments. Bryan is a very reliable umpire and is willing to work whenever necessary so that the kids can play.
**Rick Bircklebaw: **
Rick has been an IHSA licensed softball and basketball official for 17 years. Rick has worked both sports at various levels including post-season assignments. Rick was selected to work the 2021 Class 1A/2A IHSA Softball State Finals. He will be recognized at this year’s IHSA Officials Conference as the 2022 IHSA Softball Umpire of the Year. Rick receives high praise from schools and partners for his abilities as an athletic official.
**Kenny Hanshew: **
Kenny has been an IHSA football official for over 30 years. Kenny was a member of the crew that worked the 2018 Class 2A Football State Championship game. He continues to officiate football. He was also previously and currently is the head girls basketball coach at Blue Ridge High School in Farmer City. Kenny has previously served as the president of the BNOA as well as a sport VP.
**Adding Volleyball to the BNOA: **
There is a Yes/No question that you will be voting on as to whether or not the BNOA should add volleyball as a sport recognized by the association. In accordance with the BNOA constitution, in order for a sport to be recognized by the association, the sport must have ten active members of the association licensed in the sport in order to be recognized and have a sport VP. The sport must maintain a minimum of ten officials licensed in the sport in order to maintain recognition. In order to be recognized, a simple majority of voting members must approve before the sport is recognized. If the sport addition is approved, then the current BNOA executive board will appoint a sport VP. The sport VP will hold that position for two years or until the next sport VP election cycle, whichever comes first.
